Cryosurgery

Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive, great alternative for surgery for certain conditions especially small skin lumps. We can use it in conscious patients, or those undergoing anaesthesia for another condition, or under sedation for delicate areas and wriggly patients. Cryosurgery uses high pressure liquid nitrogen to freeze and kill cells that later form a scab and fall off. This technique leads to minimal scarring and skin changes, and is rarely painful. Taking just a few minutes for a treatment, it's a really great tool that we can use to help our patients, especially those elderly or ill patients where we may want to avoid an anaesthetic.

Consultations

Regular exams and checkups are a critical component of your pet’s health care. We advise all pet owners to bring their animals in for routine examinations.

Seeing your pets for regular checkups allows our veterinary surgeons to establish a baseline in your pet’s body chemistry so that we can be aware of any potentially harmful changes.

We will also discuss with you appropriate preventative health care such as diet and nutrition, vaccination, treatment for internal and external parasites (mainly fleas and worms), dental care, and more.

If you would like to schedule an exam for your pet, please call us today at 01223 249331.

Home Visits

We would always recommend that we see your pet at the Practice as we have all our medication and equipment to hand and a nurse to help us if required. However, we understand that it is not always possible to bring your pet to the Practice and will therefore offer a home visit. These visits have to be planned around the cases we are seeing at the Practice and are typically late morning to mid-afternoon to avoid Cambridge rush hour!

Please let us know if there are any specific requirements that will help us ensure the visit goes as smoothly as possible for you and your pet.

Laser therapy

We're delighted to be able to offer Laser Therapy as part of an innovative approach to pain management. Our state of the art, class IV Laser can be used to reduce inflammation and pain in chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. It can also be used to promote wound healing in a variety of situations such as post-operative wound management, treatment of hotspots and also to treat gingivitis.

Take a look at the K-Laser website for more information about how Laser therapy works and whether your pet would benefit from this non-invasive, pain free technology.

For chronic conditions such as arthritis, we recommend a course of laser sessions. Typically this will be 2 sessions per week for 3 weeks. Pets usually find these sessions relaxing and often feel markedly improved following their first session.

Our Laser clinics are lead by the nursing team. Please feel free to speak to our nurses for more information. We've been delighted with the positive feedback we've received so far since using the K-Laser.

Microchipping

A small microchip is inserted under the skin, between the shoulder blades, which stores a unique identifier. This number is linked to a secure database with the owner's contact details so that a lost pet can be traced back to their rightful owner. This is typically carried out during vaccinations or when the animal is under general anaesthesia for neutering.

It is now compulsory, since April 2016, for all dogs in England to be microchipped to help deter theft, encourage responsible ownership and to help re-unite lost dogs. We also strongly recommend that other pets are microchipped, especially cats, to help to return them home if they stray or are involved in an accident.

Imaging

We have a range of imaging equipment allowing us to fully assess many conditions in our patients. These include whole-body x-ray, fine detail dental x-ray for teeth, extremities, and very small patients, rigid and flexible endoscopes, as well as ultrasound.

Emma Jarrett is an RCVS recognised Advanced Veterinary Practitioner in Diagnostic Imaging, so can offer advanced ultrasound scanning of hearts, abdomens and other anatomical structures, as well as use and interpretation of other imaging modalities, not often available in most GP practices.

Neutering

We recommend an Adolescent Health Check around 6 months of age when we discuss the best timing for neutering your pet. This will vary between individuals as it will depend on their breed, size and behaviour.

Bitches can be spayed from 9 months of age, or 3 months after a season. However, the specific timing will vary by breed and also factors relating to individual dogs, therefore please do ask us for advice.

Male dogs are typically castrated from 6-9 months of age, but again there is variation by breed and individual temperament.

Cats can be castrated or spayed from 5 months old.

Rabbits can be neutered from 4 months old.

Nurse Clinics

Our nurses offer a range of skills. You can book a nurse appointment for the following:

  • Weight clinics

  • Worming and flea control

Puppy School

Aim

To encourage early socialisation and basic training of puppies on a reward basis.

The school's aims are to help you give your puppy the best start in life by providing information about training, worming, feeding, and showing you dosing techniques in a relaxed, non-hurried environment.

Instructors

Flo and Mark Merritt, assisted by Vicki Gee and Charlie Clarricoates (a well-known dog trainer and writer).

What Is Involved

Weekly 1-hour sessions for 6 weeks. Classes are on-going; you can join at any stage (subject to an available place). If you miss one week you can add it on at the end.

Limited to 2 people per dog (including no more than 1 child per dog), but we encourage other members of the family to come as observers so that everyone handles the puppy in the same way.

Reward-based system for dog; homework each week for you! All training aids, toys, treats, etc. are available from the practice on training evenings and during the week (our normal practice hours of 8.30am - 6.30pm).

When Can My Pup Start?

Any time after their first vaccination up to 20 weeks old.

When And Where Are The Classes Held?

On Monday evenings at the practice:

  • Class 1 at 7.30pm
  • Class 2 at 8.30pm

Whenever possible, the class will be outside in our purpose built puppy paddock which has been disinfected and is reserved exclusively for Puppy School. If the weather is unfavourable, then classes will be held indoors.
